Moving costs in Switzerland: company, cleaning, deadlines

A Swiss move rarely costs just the van. Between the quote, final cleaning with handover guarantee and the deposit, several thousand francs add up fast. Knowing the components means planning realistically — and saving in the right places.

Moving company or DIY?

  • Company: for a 3.5-room flat locally, CHF 1,500–3,000 including transport and helpers; distinctly more with packing service. Get three quotes — spreads are wide.
  • DIY: van rental CHF 100–200 per day plus helpers' meals. Cheap, but honestly account for your time and damage risk.
  • Rule of thumb: from 3 rooms or beyond 30 km, the company almost always pays off.

Final cleaning with handover guarantee

The trickiest item: professional cleaning with a handover guarantee costs CHF 500–1,500 depending on size — but the company answers for complaints and returns free of charge. Without a guarantee you risk deposit deductions. Get the guarantee in writing and record the handover together.

Deposit, deadlines and formalities

  • Deposit: up to three months' rent into a blocked account — plan for this liquidity.
  • Termination: usually three months to an official date; check your contract early.
  • Registration: within 8–14 days at the residents' office of the new domicile (varies by canton), bringing ID and lease.
  • Taxes: work-related moving costs are deductible under conditions — keep receipts.

Checklist: 8 weeks to moving day

  • 8 weeks out: terminate, gather quotes, fix the date.
  • 4 weeks out: get boxes and material, report address changes (mail forwarding, bank, insurers, subscriptions).
  • 1 week out: defrost the fridge, pack the toolbox, reserve parking at both flats.
  • Handover: photograph meters, sign the protocol, return all keys.
  • Afterwards: register within the deadline at the residents' office — and photo-document the old flat for the final bill.

Moving and taxes: new multiplier, new deductions

A canton change is also a tax event:

  • New multiplier from arrival: what counts is the situation on 31 December — moving to Zug on 30 December benefits the whole year.
  • Deducting the move: work-related moves (shorter commute) are deductible as professional expenses — keep receipts.
  • Double household: transition months with two rents are partly deductible if work-motivated.
  • Withholding tax: cross-border workers additionally report the move to the employer for a correct tariff.

Mini case: 4.5 rooms over 40 km

Family L. moves 40 km into a 4.5-room flat. Company quote: CHF 3,200. Cleaning with guarantee: CHF 1,100. New deposit (3 rents at CHF 2,400): CHF 7,200 blocked. Total cash need on moving day: CHF 11,500 — of which CHF 7,200 merely blocked, not spent. Tip: the old deposit (CHF 6,000) frees up only weeks later; bridge with savings or ask the bank for a rental guarantee (annual premium about 4–5% of the amount).
