Frequently asked questions
- How much is a speeding fine in Switzerland?
- In urban areas, exceeding the limit by 1–5 km/h costs CHF 40, 6–10 km/h CHF 120 and 11–15 km/h CHF 250. From 16 km/h over in urban areas, a report and a warning follow.
- Is the measurement tolerance deducted?
- Yes. Depending on the method, 3 to 7 km/h are deducted from the measured speed. Only the speed after this deduction counts for the fine.
- What happens if I'm more than 20 km/h over the limit in an urban area?
- From 16 km/h over in urban areas it is a minor offence (report and warning). From 21 km/h over, a licence withdrawal of at least one month may follow.
- Are fines the same in every canton?
- Fixed fines are governed by federal law and are therefore the same throughout Switzerland. Cantons may differ in payment deadlines and enforcement.
- When is it a racing offence?
- You are a racer if you exceed the limit by 40 km/h in a 30 zone, 50 km/h in a 50 zone, 60 km/h outside built-up areas or 80 km/h on the motorway.
- Can I appeal a fixed fine?
- Yes. If you dispute the fine, do not pay it: the case is then passed to the competent authority. A fixed fine can only be contested by not paying it.
