Minor traffic offences in Switzerland are handled with fixed fines (Ordnungsbussen), governed by federal law (SR 741.031).

One catalogue for the whole country

Unlike taxes, fixed fines are not cantonal. The catalogue applies throughout Switzerland; cantons differ only in payment deadlines and enforcement.

Pay on time, avoid extra steps

If you pay a fixed fine within the deadline, no further measures follow. If you dispute it, simply do not pay – the case is then passed to the competent authority.

Common examples

Using a phone without a hands-free device costs CHF 100, running a red light CHF 250, and a missing motorway vignette CHF 200.

Frequently asked questions

Are fixed fines the same in every canton?
Yes. They are governed by federal law and are therefore identical throughout Switzerland.
How do I contest a fixed fine?
By not paying it within the deadline, the case is forwarded to the competent authority.
